Onderliggende sociale thema&#8217;s zijn geweld, sociaal-economische en culturele verschillen, discriminatie en kansenongelijkheid. De musical geldt als een van de populairste aller tijden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Samenvatting plot<\/strong><br>De Jets en de Sharks, twee rivaliserende jeugdbendes met verschillende culturele achtergronden, strijden om de heerschappij in een wijk in New York City. Tony, een voormalig lid van de Jets, ontmoet en wordt verliefd op Maria, de zus van Bernardo, de leider van de Sharks. Hun liefde ontsteekt een keten van gebeurtenissen die de spanningen tussen de bendes verder doen escaleren. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ontvangst<\/strong><br><em>West Side Story<\/em> was een groot kritisch en commercieel succes. De choreografie, de vernieuwende muziek, de hoge energie en het spannende onderwerp van jeugdbendes werden beschouwd als baanbrekend. De show wordt inmiddels al zeventig jaar met regelmaat opnieuw geproduceerd. In 1961 en 2021 werden Oscar-winnende filmversies gemaakt. Sondheim, zelf een groot filmliefhebber en -kenner, was enthousiast over de filmproductie van Steven Spielberg in het jaar van zijn overlijden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sondheims eerste musical op Broadway is uiteindelijk ook misschien wel de bekendste gebleven, zeker in Nederland. In lijstjes van de beste musicals aller tijden prijkt <em>West Side Story<\/em> doorgaans op een plek in de top-5 of top-10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Liedteksten<\/strong><br>Toch had Sondheim gemengde gevoelens bij <em>West Side Story<\/em>. Niet alleen is het niet zijn eigen muziek, maar hij had ook moeite met de po\u00ebtische, sentimentele voorkeuren van Bernstein. Een van de kenmerken van Sondheims latere werk is dat de liedteksten nauw aansluiten bij de belevingswereld en het taalgebruik van de personages. In <em>West Side Story<\/em> horen we tot Sondheims ergernis echter straatjongeren teksten zingen als &#8220;Today the world was just an address&#8221;. Sondheim probeerde meerdere teksten die hij te klef vond, te opzichtig of niet passend bij de personages later aan te passen. Voorbeelden waren zinnen als &#8220;It&#8217;s alarming how charming I feel&#8221; en &#8220;pretty wonderful boy&#8221; in &#8220;I feel pretty&#8221;. Sondheims pogingen strandden op het enthousiasme van zijn samenwerkingspartners over de oorspronkelijke teksten.
