Ze realiseert zich uiteindelijk dat zij alles voor zichzelf gedaan heeft en poogt de relatie met Louise te herstellen, met onbekend resultaat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hoogtepunt in de &#8220;Golden Age of Broadway&#8221;<\/strong><br>Sondheim was met <em>Gypsy <\/em>betrokken bij een hoogtepunt in de musicaltraditie van zijn mentor Hammerstein. <em>Oklahoma!<\/em> uit 1943, met muziek en tekst door het beroemde duo Richard Rodgers en Oscar Hammerstein II, wordt gezien als het begin van deze traditie en van de &#8220;Golden Age of Broadway&#8221;. Onder leiding van Rodgers en Hammerstein werden musicals met doorlopende verhaallijnen, ge\u00efntegreerde muziek en complexe personages ge\u00efntroduceerd, de zogenaamde &#8220;book musicals&#8221;. <em>Fiddler on the Roof <\/em>van Jerry Bock en Sheldon Harnick was in 1963 de laatste musical in deze traditie. Na <em>Gypsy<\/em> zou Sondheim met de introductie van de &#8220;concept musical&#8221; in 1970 vernieuwing brengen, te beginnen met <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/23\/company-1970\/\">Company<\/a><\/em>. Toch beschouwde Sondheim <em>Gypsy<\/em> als een van de beste musicals in zijn soort: levendig en vermakelijk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ontvangst<\/strong><br><em>Gypsy<\/em> werd zeer goed ontvangen door zowel het publiek als de critici. De complexiteit van de personages en de emotionele diepgang van de muziek en teksten hebben bijgedragen aan de blijvende populariteit van de show. <em>Gypsy <\/em>krijgt in 2024 zijn vijfde Broadway revival. In 1962 en 1993 werd <em>Gypsy<\/em> succesvol verfilmd met respectievelijk Rosalind Russell en Bette Midler als Mama Rose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Het hart van <em>Gypsy: <\/em>Mama Rose<\/strong><br>De hoofdrol van Rose in <em>Gypsy <\/em>is een van de meest iconische rollen van het theater. Complex, intens, tragisch en met uitdagende muzikale nummers draagt Rose het hele stuk. De onverzettelijke Broadway-legende Ethel Merman cre\u00eberde de rol en in de loop der jaren hebben vele grote theateractrices zich eraan gewaagd in de vele revivals. Angela Lansbury (1975), Tyne Daly (1989) en Patti Lupone (2008) wonnen een Tony voor de rol, Bette Midler (1994) een Golden Globe, Imelda Staunton een Laurence Oliver Award (2016) en Bernadette Peters en Ethel Merman zelf kregen een Tony nominatie. Zes van hen zijn hiernaast te zien. June heeft genoeg van haar moeder en de optredens, en is vertrokken. Rose&#8217;s andere dochter Louise en manager smeken Rose de show business te laten voor wat het is, maar Rose wil er niets van weten en richt zich nu op de carri\u00e8re van Louise. turns out to be the season&#8217;s best. As a production, <em>Gypsy <\/em>hangs together with professional ingenuity and gives Ethel Merman something responsive to work with. [&#8230;] Since <em>Gypsy<\/em> has a literate theme, it has put everybody on his best behavior. Mr. Styne has written his most colorful score. The music is fresh and lively in the musical-comedy tradition. Taking every situation on its own level, he has written dramatic songs, as well as Tin Pin Alley tunes. Stephen Sondheim&#8217;s lyrics are equally hackneyed. For <em>Gypsy<\/em> is a thoroughly professional musical. To a good theme it adds the spontaneity of a well-staged show. Nothing is stuck on. The enjoyment comes from the core of a professionally written script and score. And there is a topflight professional at the head of the cast. The music bounces out of the pit, assertive, confident and cocky, and has a love affair with Stephen Sondheim&#8217;s elegantly paced, daringly phrased lyrics. And then there is the book by Arthur Laurents. But really the book is first. [&#8230;] Mr. Styne&#8217;s music sings with a brassy joyousness, and Mr. Sondheim&#8217;s lyrics cheekily but endearingly sneak around the music. A wrenching fable about a tyrannical stage mother and the daughters she both champions and cripples &#8211; yet also a showcase for one classic Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim song and rousing Jerome Robbins vaudeville routine after another &#8211; <em>Gypsy<\/em> is nothing if not Broadway&#8217;s own brassy, unlikely answer to &#8221;King Lear.&#8221; It speaks to you one way when you are a child, then chases after you to say something else when you&#8217;ve grown up.
