De titel is een verwijzing naar de clich\u00e9matige opening van vari\u00e9t\u00e9-komieken.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Samenvatting plot<\/strong><br>De musical speelt zich af in het oude Rome en volgt de sluwe slaaf Pseudolus, die zijn vrijheid probeert te winnen door zijn meester Hero te helpen de mooie slavin Philia te veroveren. Philia is echter beloofd aan een generaal, wat leidt tot een reeks komische verwarringen en verkleedpartijen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ontvangst<\/strong><br>De musical werd bij zijn premi\u00e8re goed ontvangen door zowel critici als het publiek. De voorstelling werd geprezen om zijn humor, snelle tempo en inventieve combinatie van farce en vaudeville-elementen. Critici waardeerden vooral de slimme dialogen, de komische timing en de energieke uitvoeringen. Het publiek reageerde enthousiast op de aanstekelijke nummers en de hilarische situaties. Het resulteerde in een succesvolle Broadway-run van meer dan twee jaar en zes Tony Awards, waaronder Beste Musical. Relatief weinig lof kwam Sondheim toe: hij werd niet eens genomineerd. Elke acteur die op Broadway de hoofdrol van Pseudolus speelde, kreeg er overigens een Tony voor: Zero Mostel (1962), Phil Silvers (1972) en Nathan Lane (1996).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De filmversie van <em>A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum<\/em>, uitgebracht in 1966, kreeg gemengde reacties. Hoewel sommige critici de film waardeerden om zijn slapstick-humor en de sterke prestaties van de cast, waaronder Zero Mostel, Phil Silvers en Buster Keaton, vonden anderen dat de film niet helemaal de geest en energie van de originele Broadway-productie wist te vangen. Desondanks was de film redelijk succesvol bij het publiek, dat de komische capriolen en de kleurrijke verbeelding van het oude Rome waardeerde. Hoewel de film niet dezelfde iconische status bereikte als de toneelversie, bleef het een geliefde adaptatie voor liefhebbers van klassieke musicalkomedies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On-Sondheimse stijl<\/strong><br>Sondheim beschouwde <em>A Funny Thing<\/em> als de &#8220;tightest, most satisfyingly plotted and gracefully written farce&#8221; die hij ooit zag. Maar hij zag zijn teksten ervoor als de moeilijkste die hij ooit moest schrijven. Reden voor Sondheims moeilijkheden was dat de setting van een klucht geen ruimte bood voor nummers die emotionele reizen zichtbaar maakten, maar alleen voor songs om het moment zelf te versterken. En die laatsten behoorden tot een musicaltraditie waarvan Sondheim nu juist afstand wilde nemen. Bovendien liet Sondheim zich naar eigen oordeel verleiden tot het laten zien van zijn tekstuele kunsten, waarmee hij de aandacht vestigde op zichzelf in plaats van op de personages en het verhaal, en op de slimheid van de teksten in plaats van op daadwerkelijk grappige momenten. In een eerdere periode was dat gebruikelijk (denk aan nummers van Cole Porter), maar het paste &#8211; soms tot Sondheims verdriet &#8211; niet meer in deze tijd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tekenend is het commentaar dat Sondheim op zijn concepten voor de show kreeg van toneelschrijver James Goldman. Goldman vond zowel het script als de partituur briljant, maar concludeerde dat ze niet bij elkaar pasten. Een mening die Sondheim tot het eind van zijn leven deelde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Het uiteindelijke resultaat zijn songs over voor zichzelf sprekende, eenduidige, komische situaties. The sweet was all in the writing, in the excitement of getting back to composing music and in the sheer pleasure of spending so much time in the company of Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, two of the funniest <em>and <\/em>wittiest men I&#8217;ve ever had the privilege of knowing. The bitter was the show&#8217;s out-of-town try-out. [&#8230;] Worse yet, the show&#8217;s problems caused tensions among Burt and Larry and me that took months to resolve. <\/sub><br><br><sub>When we opened on Broadway the bitter began to outweigh the sweet two to one: the reception was ecstatic &#8211; for everything but the songs. [&#8230;] As I sat at home licking my wounds and watching everyone receive their silver disks and thank one another profusely on national television, I had nothing to console myself with but the knowledge that the show was a huge success and I would make some money. Personally my favorite for 10 years has been <em>A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum<\/em>. Last night at the Lunt\u2010Fontanne Theater <em>A Funny Thing<\/em> happened once again, and I fell in love with it as desperately as ever. This is the funniest, bawdiest and most enchanting Broadway musical that Plautus, with a little help from Stephen Sondheim, Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbert, ever wrote.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What the authors of <em>A Funny Thing<\/em> have done is to take a sampling of Plautus&#8217;s kind of humor and link it with our contemporary sense of fun. The results are not merely hilarious, they are also immeasurably endearing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Few musicals have been so well\u2010crafted as this. Mr. Sondheim&#8217;s music is original and charming, with considerable musical subtlety but a regard for down\u2010to\u2010earth show-biz vigor that is precisely what is needed. And as always, his lyrics are a joy to listen for. The American theater has not had a lyricist like this since Hart or Porter. Here&#8217;s a glorious, old-fashioned farce that, with its vintage Stephen Sondheim score and its breathless book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, celebrates everything that man holds least dear but can&#8217;t deny himself: lust, greed, vanity, ambition; in short, all of those little failings that make man human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet for all of its disguises, mistaken identities, pratfalls and leering jokes, <em>A Funny Thing<\/em> is as sophisticated as anything now on Broadway. In its own lunatic way, it&#8217;s both wise and rigorously disciplined. Easy sentimentality is nowhere to be found here; in its place: the kind of organized chaos that leads to sheer, extremely contagious high spirits. [&#8230;] <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Sondheim&#8217;s score both serves the comedy and provides a sort of commentary on it. From &#8220;Comedy Tonight,&#8221; the rousing anthem that opens the show and provides the finale, <em>A Funny Thing<\/em> is propelled as much by its witty, comically inane love songs and patter songs as by its book.
