De productie werd geplaagd door allerlei tegenslagen en interne ruzies. Al na een week viel het doek voor de musical na negatieve recensies. Het album werd pas daarna opgenomen, en ook voor toenmalige hoofdrolspelers als Angela Lansbury is het gebrek aan enthousiasme erin hoorbaar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cultstatus<\/strong><br>Maar zestig jaar later heeft <em>Anyone Can Whistle <\/em>cultstatus bereikt, zijn meerdere songs geliefd geworden en in 2020 werd zelfs voor het eerst <a href=\"https:\/\/music.apple.com\/nl\/album\/anyone-can-whistle-first-complete-recording-arthur\/1538636428?l=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">een nieuw en volledig castalbum<\/a> uitgebracht na opnames ervoor sinds 1997. <em>Anyone Can Whistle<\/em> heeft een aantal grote Broadway-klassiekers voortgebracht, zoals de titelsong, &#8220;Everybody says don&#8217;t&#8221; en &#8220;There won&#8217;t be trumpets&#8221;. Het zijn met name de muziek en teksten van Sondheim die een tweede leven hebben gekregen; voor het stuk zelf geldt nog altijd dat het als gemankeerd wordt gezien en producties zijn schaars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Samenvatting plot<\/strong><br>De burgemeester van een Amerikaans dorpje, Cora Hoover Hooper, arrangeert een zogenaamd wonder om toeristen aan te trekken. Verpleegster Fay Apple, die sceptisch is over het wonder, en Dr. J. Bowden Hapgood, die de geestelijke gezondheid van de inwoners in twijfel trekt, werken samen om de fraude aan het licht te brengen. Als de toeristen komen, raken die vermengd met non-conformisten die zijn opgenomen in een instelling, &#8220;The Cookie Jar&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ontvangst<\/strong><br>Zowel volgens Sondheim als veel critici leed <em>Anyone Can Whistle<\/em> ondanks briljante momenten onder de zichtbare zelfvoldaanheid en zelfs neerbuigendheid van de jonge makers ervan. Pregnant voorbeeld is het einde van de eerste akte, waarin de acteurs de rollen omdraaien en applaudisseren voor het publiek. Het stuk adresseert daarnaast zoveel sociale vraagstukken in zijn satirische stijl, dat het publiek het spoor erin bijster kan raken. Voorbeelden van thema&#8217;s zijn conformisme, individuele vrijheid en sociale controle, corruptie, de macht van religie en opvattingen over geestelijke gezondheid. De directe maatschappijkritische inslag was \u00fcberhaupt ongebruikelijk voor een musical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Publiek maakt kennis met Sondheim<\/strong><br>Daar komt bij dat Sondheims muziekstijl onbekend en onbemind waren. De kritiek die Sondheim zijn hele carri\u00e8re tot zijn grote ergernis zou achtervolgen is dat zijn muziek niet &#8220;hummable&#8221; zou zijn, een consequentie van zijn keuze om de muziek en tekst in dienst te stellen van het verhaal en de emotie in elk individueel stuk en personage. Hij maakte er later in het autobiografische lied &#8220;Opening Doors&#8221; uit <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/15\/merrily-we-roll-along-1981\/\">Merrily We Roll Along<\/a><\/em> een directe verwijzing naar. Voor het publiek van <em>Anyone Can Whistle<\/em> was dit de eerste kennismaking met zijn unieke muziekstijl, afgezien van <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/03\/a-funny-thing-happened-on-the-way-to-the-forum-1962\/\">A Funny Thing<\/a><\/em> dat hier minder van had laten zien. De waardering hiervoor is sindsdien, zoals deze website aantoont, enorm gegroeid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#ff7a5c42\"><strong>Fragmenten<\/strong> (in volgorde van de show)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Me and my town&#8221;<\/mark> is de introductie van Cora Hoover Hooper in haar volle narcistische en opportunistische glorie.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;There won&#8217;t be trumpets&#8221;<\/mark> is het lied dat zuster Fay Apple van de Cookie Jar tot haar &#8220;cookies&#8221; zingt als ze dreigt gearresteerd te worden, omdat ze niet wil zeggen wie de cookies en wie de toeristen in het vermengde publiek zijn. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Na haar vlucht keert ze terug in de vermomming van de sensuele &#8220;Lady from Lourdes&#8221; en verleidt ze de jongeman Hapgood, die het dorpje inmiddels in zijn ban krijgt, met <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Come play wiz me&#8221;<\/mark>. Instead, I felt only disappointment that the show would close almost immediately and therefore that more people who might enjoy it would not have the chance to see it. <br><br>I was buoyed by the realization that I had loved writing it and that I was happy with the result. Triumphant with an asterisk, perhaps; this wild and crazy musical, circa 1964, retains its problems \u2014 most especially the libretto by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/arthur-laurents\/\">Arthur Laurents<\/a>, which figuratively and literally places the audience in the crazy house. Laurents\u2019s satirical book, though clever and novel, works too hard at too many things, aiming darts at every -ism in its path: conformism, evangelism and cronyism among them. [&#8230;] But it wasn\u2019t just the complicated book; audiences weren\u2019t yet ready for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/12\/theater\/stephen-sondheim-playwright.html\">the complications of Sondheim<\/a>. Despite his score for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/29\/a-funny-thing-happened-on-the-way-to-the-forum-1962\/\">A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum<\/a><\/em> \u2014 a hit that was still running after two years on Broadway \u2014 he was mostly pegged as a lyricist, and his music for <em>Whistle<\/em> did not go over well. In <em>The Times<\/em>, Howard Taubman allowed that some songs were pleasing, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/www.nytimes.com\/books\/98\/07\/19\/specials\/sondheim-whistle.html\">but not enough of them<\/a>.\u201d Another critic called the music, inaccurately, atonal.<br>Despite such judgments, several songs from <em>Whistle<\/em> \u2014 including \u201cA Parade in Town,\u201d \u201cThere Won\u2019t Be Trumpets,\u201d \u201cWith So Little to Be Sure Of\u201d and the title song \u2014 are now widely performed.
