Hij schreef de teksten bij de muziek van Richard Rodgers (componist van o.a. <em>Oklahoma!<\/em>, <em>The Sound of Music<\/em> en <em>South Pacific<\/em>). Ondanks een veelheid aan mooie elementen geldt het als een gemankeerd stuk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Samenvatting plot<\/strong><br><em>Do I Hear a Waltz?<\/em> is gebaseerd op het toneelstuk <em>The time of the cuckoo<\/em> van Arthur Laurents, dat in 1955 verfilmd werd als <em>Summertime<\/em> met Katharine Hepburn. Hoofdpersoon is Leona Samish, een Amerikaanse secretaresse die op vakantie gaat naar Veneti\u00eb. Daar ontmoet ze de charmante antiekverkoper Renato Di Rossi. Hoewel Leona zich aangetrokken voelt tot Renato, komt ze er al snel achter dat hij getrouwd is en niet van plan is zijn vrouw te verlaten. Terwijl ze worstelt met haar gevoelens en de realiteit van de situatie, ontdekt Leona dat ware liefde soms onbereikbaar blijft. Het stuk verkent thema\u2019s van eenzaamheid, romantiek, eigenwaarde en de kloof tussen fantasie en werkelijkheid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Totstandkoming<\/strong><br>De geboorte van de musical vond plaats onder slecht gesternte. Oscar Hammerstein, de beoogde tekstschrijver, overleed en stelde voor zijn dood voor&nbsp;om Sondheim hem te laten vervangen. Zijn compagnon, componist Richard Rodgers, kampte met alcoholproblemen en vertwijfeling over zijn eigen kunnen. Hij weigerde muziek te herschrijven en vond Sondheims teksten niet goed. Sondheim zelf ging het project aan onder druk van Mary Rodgers, de wens van Hammerstein en zijn eigen wens financieel garen te spinnen bij de vertaling van een reeds verfilmd toneelstuk naar een musical. Al met al was er bij de makers noch liefde voor elkaar noch voor de musical zelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ontvangst<\/strong> <br>De show kreeg gematigd positieve en negatieve recensies. De Broadway-productie kreeg weliswaar 220 voorstellingen, drie Tony-nominaties en een aantal nummers werden uitgebracht als single en op de radio gespeeld, maar de musical verdiende de kosten niet terug, won geen prijzen en kreeg nauwelijks revivals. Kern van de inhoudelijke kritiek was destijds dat de verandering van toneelstuk naar musical niets toevoegde, en de muziek slechts als omlijsting dienst deed. Sondheim deelde die kritiek en noemde de musical \u201cnot a bad show, merely a dead one\u201d.<br>In de jaren negentig deed Sondheim samen met Arthur Laurents een uitgebreide revisie. Revivals van het stuk zijn niettemin nog altijd schaars. Recensies van revivals waren soms positief, maar de mismatch tussen script en muziek bleef bestaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Encores!<\/strong><br>Sinds 1994 vindt in New York de concertreeks Encores! plaats, waarin &#8220;vergeten&#8221; Amerikaanse musicals kort opnieuw worden opgevoerd. Dat gebeurde onder andere voor Sondheim-musicals <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/05\/anyone-can-whistle-1964\/\">Anyone Can Whistle<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/15\/merrily-we-roll-along-1981\/\">Merrily We Roll Along<\/a><\/em> en ook voor <em>Do I Hear a Waltz?<\/em>. Een van de video&#8217;s hiernaast geeft een impressie van die productie uit 2016, met daarin korte fragmenten uit zes songs uit de show. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>We&#8217;re gonna be all right<\/strong><br>Het lied <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">\u201cWe\u2019re gonna be all right\u201d<\/mark> is een mooi en geslaagd voorbeeld van Sondheims stijl als tekstschrijver. Het werd echter in de versie op deze site nooit in de musical opgenomen. The show deserved its failure. <\/sub><br><br><sub>I had learned from observing Lenny [Leonard Bernstein, red.] that there is nothing wrong with falling, as long as you don&#8217;t fall from the lowest rung. <em>Do I Hear a Waltz? <\/em>was the lowest rung. Between it and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/27\/anyone-can-whistle-1964\/\">Anyone Can Whistle<\/a><\/em> I learned that the only reason to write a show is for love &#8211; just not too much of it. <\/sub><br><br><sub>Discussing the song &#8220;Bargaining&#8221; [&#8230;] I said it was pleasant, but no showstopper. Unfortunately, that describes the whole show. That and the fact that it shouldn&#8217;t have been written in the first place. It was my first and only &#8220;Why?&#8221; musical. At the same time one cannot suppress a regret that they failed to be bolder. For there are times, particularly in the early stages, when the songs are merely a decoration. They give the impression that they are there because a musical requires music. They do not translate the story into the fresh and marvelous language that the rich resources of the musical stage make possible.<br><em>Do I Hear a Waltz?<\/em> is not a great musical. It does not make Venice materialize in spirit as it might. But it has the courage to abjure garishness and stridency. It speaks and sings in a low key. There are some gorgeous ballads, including \u201cSomeone Like You\u201d and \u201cTake the Moment,\u201d beautifully sung by veteran opera singer Troxell, as well as the joyous title song. But there are also such sardonically funny numbers as \u201cThis Week\u2019s Americans,\u201d [sic, red.] \u201cWhat Do We Do? We Fly?\u201d and \u201cNo Understand.\u201d None of it registers as among Rodgers or Sondheim\u2019s best work, but even their second-tier material is superior to almost everyone else\u2019s. [&#8230;] It\u2019s easy to see why&nbsp;<em>Do I Hear a Waltz?<\/em>&nbsp;failed originally and why it probably couldn\u2019t sustain a commercial run now. But I was fascinated by every second of it, and by the unresolved conflict of talents it embodies.<br>As in much of Laurents\u2019s work, the tone of <em>Waltz<\/em> wobbles between sentimentality and cynicism. The same tension is felt in the songs, with Rodgers and Mr. Sondheim tugging in different directions and ending up in a rather listless draw. Rodgers\u2019s score, although beautifully performed by the Encores! orchestra (directed with charm by Rob Berman), mostly seems to float up a lazy canal, with surprisingly unvaried rhythms. [&#8230;]<br>Only occasionally do you hear Mr. Sondheim wielding words with the dexterity for which he is famous. A breakout exception like the devastating ode to marital hypocrisy,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=V4Pn1LdXRu0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cWe\u2019re Gonna Be All Right,\u201d<\/a> feels out of sync with the characters who sing it.
