De musical was een uur durende aflevering van een televisieserie, <em>Stage 67<\/em>, met speciaal daarvoor geschreven musicals en toneelstukken. Sondheim schreef een groot deel van de muziek en vier nummers voor <em>Evening Primrose<\/em>, waarvan vooral &#8220;I remember sky&#8221; and &#8220;Take me to the world&#8221; nog veelvuldig in Sondheim-concerten worden opgenomen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Samenvatting plot<\/strong><br>Het bizarre verhaal is gebaseerd op een kort verhaal door John Collier. Hoofdpersoon is de dichter Charles, die besluit te ontsnappen uit de wereld door in een warenhuis te gaan wonen. Zo is hij van alles voorzien en hoeft hij nooit meer naar buiten. Hij komt erachter dat hij niet de enige is: er wonen al veel meer mensen om dezelfde reden. Charles wordt er verliefd op Ella, die weg wil maar gevangen wordt gehouden. De gemeenschap in het warenhuis bewaart hun geheim door iedereen die probeert te ontsnappen in mannequins te veranderen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Totstandkoming en ontvangst<\/strong><br>Sondheim en Goldman werkten destijds samen aan <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/10\/follies-1971\/\">Follies<\/a><\/em> en solliciteerden ondertussen met succes naar een bijdrage aan de serie om financi\u00eble redenen. De musical werd slechts die ene maal uitgezonden en passeerde relatief onopvallend. Het bevat echter nummers in kenmerkende Sondheim-stijl die nog veelvuldig worden vertolkt. We horen onder meer innerlijke dialogen, karakterontwikkeling, rijke harmonie\u00ebn met verrassende sprongen en afwisselingen, gebruik van geluidseffecten, teksten met zowel oppervlakkige als diepgaande betekenis en nieuwe muzikale thema&#8217;s. <br>In 2010 kwam een dvd uit met de volledige aflevering\/musical. Tijdens de (vanwege coronabeperkingen online) viering van Sondheim&#8217;s 90e verjaardag zong Laura Benanti deze versie van het lied.
