De musical is romantisch, operette-achtig, licht van toon en heeft een traditioneel plot. Innovatief was de musical vooral in de unieke muzikale consistentie via walsritmes, de complexe lyrische structuren en de combinatie van een klassieke komedie met diepgaande karakterstudies. Het bevat ook Sondheim&#8217;s bekendste nummer, &#8220;Send in the clowns&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Samenvatting<\/strong> <strong>plot<\/strong><br>De musical is gebaseerd op Ingmar Bergmans film <em>Smiles of a Summer Night<\/em> uit 1955, en speelt zich af in Zweden rond het jaar 1900. Weduwnaar Fredrik Egerman is net opnieuw getrouwd met de veel jongere Anne, als hij zijn ex, de actrice Desiree Armfeldt, tegenkomt. Ondertussen raakt ook de man van Anne&#8217;s schoolvriendin Charlotte, graaf Carl-Magnus Malcolm, in de ban van Desiree. Fredriks serieuze maar getroubleerde zoon Henrik heeft ondertussen een oogje op zijn stiefmoeder. Alle betrokkenen treffen elkaar tijdens een weekend op het landgoed van Desiree&#8217;s moeder, waar alle complexe liefdesverwikkelingen tot een hoogtepunt komen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Muzikale en tekstuele innovaties<\/strong><br>Sondheim cre\u00eberde voor <em>A Little Night Music<\/em> een muzikale achtergrond van (variaties op) walsen. Bijna het hele stuk is in de driekwartsmaat van de wals geschreven. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Het getal drie komt ook op andere manieren terug. Zo zijn er momenten waarop drie personages gelijktijdig drie verschillende nummers zingen, en gaan duetten altijd over een derde persoon. <br>Sondheim integreerde elementen van klassieke muziek &#8211; invloeden van onder andere Brahms, Ravel, Rachmaninov, Strauss en Mozart zijn te horen &#8211; en combineerde deze met moderne thema\u2019s en structuren, wat resulteert in een innovatieve mix van oud en nieuw. So I did, and I showed off, and everyone was impressed. I should add that Hal had once described the show as &#8216;whipped cream with knives,&#8221; but he was more interested in the whipped cream and I was more interested in the knives. <\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\"><sub>I kept my interest up by figuring out how to fulfill my original notion of Theme and Variations. The solution turned out to be not a dramaturgical but a musical one. [&#8230;] A score of waltz variations would be appropriate, and would supply a structural thread that could help cohere a disparate group of songs. Whenever I have to go see it [&#8230;] I fret in advance that it will seem like homework, and find, once the lights have dimmed, that I have an exhilarating time watching it. I underestimated Hugh&#8217;s work shamefully when I first read it. After living with it through numerous productions for more than thirty-five years, I&#8217;ve come to the conclusion that it is one of the half dozen best books ever written for a musical. [&#8230;] <\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\"><sub>Hal Prince has often said publicly, with some disdain, that our collaboration with Hugh on <em>A Little Night Music<\/em> was &#8220;all about having a hit&#8221;. I disagree. Certainly, we both wanted a commercial success after the financial failure of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/22\/follies-1971\/\">Follies<\/a><\/em>, but I think Hal&#8217;s lack of enthusiasm stems from two sources: first, the show wasn&#8217;t daringly different enough, as <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/23\/company-1970\/\">Company<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/22\/follies-1971\/\">Follies<\/a><\/em> had been, and second, <em>A Little Night Music<\/em> was a writer&#8217;s piece rather than a director&#8217;s &#8211; it lacked the chances for invention and spectacle called for by other musicals he had directed. Nevertheless, despite his demurrer, I do think he had a good time bringing out the elegance and lightness of the show.
