Niettemin bleef <em>The Frogs<\/em> een nicheproductie en bereikte het geen brede commerci\u00eble populariteit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Samenvatting plot<\/strong><br>Het stuk is losjes gebaseerd op Aristophanes&#8217; komedie met dezelfde naam en gaat over de god Dionysus die besluit om George Bernard Shaw (Euripides in Aristophanes&#8217; versie) uit de Onderwereld te halen, zodat die nieuwe stukken kan schrijven om de wereld te verheffen. Onderweg ontmoeten hij en zijn slaaf Xanthias verschillende karakters en komen ze terecht in een humoristische en filosofische wedstrijd tussen Shaw en William Shakespeare, die bepalen wie de wereld kan redden met hun woorden en wijsheid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Stijl en muziek<\/strong><br>De geest van Aristophanes waart in de musical rond, vooral in de satirische humor, vulgariteit en moralistische teksten. Sondheim schreef muziek passend bij traditionele Griekse tradities, zoals meerdere koornummers.<br>Maatschappelijke thema&#8217;s zijn onder meer de rol van kunst en kunstenaars in de maatschappij, waarbij de vraag wordt gesteld of kunst daadwerkelijk de kracht heeft om sociale verandering teweeg te brengen. De musical stelt kritische vragen over leiderschap en politieke verantwoordelijkheid. De wedstrijd tussen Shaw en Shakespeare gaat niet alleen over literaire verdiensten, maar ook over wie de beste idee\u00ebn heeft om de samenleving te verbeteren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Totstandkoming<\/strong><br><em>The Frogs <\/em>heeft een ongebruikelijke productiegeschiedenis. Sondheim schreef het als een gunst voor een vriend, die was gevraagd zijn versie van <em>The Frogs<\/em> uit 1941 te herhalen op Yale. Sondheim zou er een paar liedjes voor hem aan toevoegen in enkele weken tijd, voor een klein aantal voorstellingen (uiteindelijk acht) in het zwembad van Yale University. De cast bestond uit Yale-studenten, waaronder actrices Meryl Streep en Sigourney Weaver en toneelschrijver Christopher Durang. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ontvangst<\/strong><br>De productie was zowel ambitieus als uitdagend, gezien de ongebruikelijke locatie en de complexe technische eisen. De ontspannen exercitie veranderde in een ramp, in de ogen van Sondheim voornamelijk door producent Robert Brustein over wie hij vernietigend is in zijn boek &#8220;Finishing the hat&#8221;. Brustein had ook nog in het geheim recensenten had uitgenodigd om te komen kijken naar een show die nog niet klaar was om op te voeren. Desondanks werd het stuk goed ontvangen door critici en het publiek en de satirische humor werd geprezen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Broadway-productie<\/strong><br>In 2004 maakte Nathan Lane een avondvullende musical van <em>The Frogs<\/em>. Het script werd herzien en uitgebreid voor een Broadway-productie, geregisseerd door Susan Stroman, met Nathan Lane in de hoofdrol als Dionysus. Deze versie bevatte tevens nieuwe muziek en teksten van Sondheim. De Broadway-versie kreeg gemengde tot negatieve recensies; de productie werd geprezen om zijn ambitie en de uitstekende uitvoeringen van de cast, maar bekritiseerd om het gebrek aan richting en de overmatige focus in script en productie op en rond de persoon van Nathan Lane. The place is ancient Greece.\u201d The jokes, funny and ribald, are by Mr. Shevelove, the music by his \u201cForum\u201d partner, Stephen Sondheim. There are six \u201cmusical numbers,\u201d stretches of songs between the words, ranging from the effervescent \u201cParados,\u201d the score for a sensational water ballet, to \u201cParabasis,\u201d which simply marks time. Another week of effort from Mr. Sondheim and the show might have the full score it deserves. This musical updating of a 1974 adaptation of Aristophanes&#8217; 2,400-year-old comedy of gods and playwrights has the highest concentration of blue-ribbon talent of any show now on Broadway [&#8230;] The composer is &#8212; reverent pause, please &#8212; Stephen Sondheim, whose name alone causes acolytes of the American musical to bow their heads.&nbsp;[&#8230;] After dwelling with such craven procrastination on the fine ingredients that make up &#8221;The Frogs,&#8221; I am forced to concede that what should have been a zesty, airy souffl\u00e9 is a soggy, lumpy batter that never shows the slightest signs of rising. Staged in 1974 as a publicity-garnering, hourlong novelty by the Yale School of Drama &#8212; around and in the university gymnasium swimming pool, if you please &#8212; this bauble of a show has been reshaped to fill two and a half hours. The results suggest that to stretch something this slight is to shatter it. Even many of the choral numbers, with their use of dissonant counterpoint and lonely solo lines, convey somber, barbed introspection. (One of them, &#8221;It&#8217;s Only a Play,&#8221; is a beauty.) Disproving the idea that he can\u2019t do touching love songs, Sondheim gives Dionysos a beautiful hymn to Ariadne. The chorus for the frogs spawns a fiendishly intricate number in which they contrast their easygoing existence with that of \u201cfancy-pants humanitarians and chatty platitudinarians\u201d. And, when it comes to the crucial contest, the advocates of Shaw wittily comment on \u201csuch sanity, humanity, who cares about the vanity\u201d while Shakespeare\u2019s \u201cFear no more the heat o\u2019 the sun\u201d is given a supremely musical setting. The problem is that Shaw\u2019s pugnacious wit is no match for Shakespeare\u2019s poetic power and the verdict is predictable.
