Deze ongebruikelijke musical vertelt het verhaal van de opening van Japan voor de westerse wereld vanuit een Japans perspectief. De muziek vertelt hetzelfde verhaal: traditionele Japanse theaterelementen worden gecombineerd met westerse invloeden. <em>Pacific Overtures<\/em> is overweldigend door zijn inhoudelijke en muzikale ambitie, en door zijn lengte en omvangrijke cast. De show bevat bovendien een van Sondheims favoriete nummers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Plot<\/strong> <strong>en thematiek<\/strong><br><em>Pacific Overtures <\/em>is gebaseerd op historische gebeurtenissen vanaf 1853, waarbij het isolationisme van Japan werd doorbroken door westerse druk. Dramatisch startpunt van deze ontwikkeling en van de musical is de aankomst van Amerikaanse schepen aan de Japanse kust. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In een historische brief aan de Japanse keizer spreekt de Amerikaanse admiraal over de &#8220;very reasonable and pacific overtures&#8221; die de Amerikaanse president aan de Japanners biedt. En passant dreigt de admiraal met een grotere vloot terug te keren bij negatief antwoord. De titel <em>Pacific Overtures<\/em> verwijst dus naar de opening van de Pacifische relaties tussen Amerika en Japan. Maar ook naar de zogenaamd vreedzame openingszetten die daarin door de VS en andere westerse mogendheden, waaronder Nederland, werden gedaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De &#8220;Reciter&#8221; geleidt het publiek door het verhaal, en speciale aandacht in de show gaat naar twee vrienden die door de politieke gebeurtenissen plotseling tegenover elkaar komen te staan. Centraal staan de spanning tussen traditie en verandering, culturele botsingen en de onvermijdelijke modernisering die Japan moet ondergaan. Sondheims muziek is doordrenkt van Japanse invloeden, en zijn teksten zijn regelmatig geschreven in haiku-vorm of bootsen die na. Het gevoel van een isolationistisch en archa\u00efsch Japan wordt versterkt door de korte, basale teksten uit dezelfde taalfamilie, die pas worden doorbroken als de westerse ambassadeurs een weelde aan lange woorden en Romaanse en andere taalfamilies binnendragen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De originele productie was ge\u00efnspireerd op de traditionele Japanse Kabuki-theaterstijl, waarin uitsluitend mannen in dans en met specifieke stijl en klanken een drama uiteenzetten. Arrangeur Jonathan Tunick: &#8220;We were all dragged kicking and screaming by Hal, including Steve. Because it&#8217;s such an outlandish idea. And the excitement, the charm and the delight you take in the show is the challenge it presents: &#8220;What are they going to do with this?&#8221;&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ook voor het publiek was en is het een uitdaging. Hoewel de bijdrage van Sondheim consequent geprezen werd, werd de zeer ongebruikelijke productie door veel critici niet begrepen of gezien als saai of onduidelijk in zijn gezichtspunt. De originele productie sloot al na zes maanden en was geen commercieel succes, maar kreeg wel tien Tony-nominaties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Huidige waardering<\/strong><br>Inmiddels is de waardering toegenomen en geldt <em>Pacific Overtures<\/em> als een gewaagde en artistiek ambitieuze musical die belangrijke en relevante thema\u2019s behandelt met een unieke culturele gevoeligheid en muzikale genialiteit. Revivals van <em>Pacific Overtures<\/em> zijn echter door de bijzondere eisen aan cast en productie schaarser dan die van andere Sondheim-shows. Een succesvolle revival met George Takei als de Reciter in 2017 kortte de productie met een uur in en bracht het aantal castleden terug van zo&#8217;n 35 naar 10. Nummers uit <em>Pacific Overtures <\/em>komen niet of nauwelijks terug in concerten van Sondheims werk door hun specifieke verbondenheid aan de plot, sfeer en stijl van de show. (1976)<\/strong><\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;So the musical is to tell the story of Japan&#8217;s Westernization as if it were a Kabuki drama &#8212; but, of course, it soon becomes much more complicated than that. Mr. Sondheim&#8217;s music is in a style that might be called Japonaiserie (Leonard Bernstein quite often seems to be trysting with Madame Butterfly in the orchestra pit) but also uses some authentic Japanese instruments. The lyrics are totally Western and &#8212; as is the custom with Mr. Sondheim &#8212; devilish, wittily and delightfully clever. Musically there is a disparity between Mr. Sondheim&#8217;s operettalike elegance and ethnic overlay, but even this succeeds with all its carefully applied patina of pastiche &#8212; that on demand can embrace Sullivan or Offenbach. Mr. Sondheim is the most remarkable man in the Broadway musical today &#8212; and here he shows it victoriously. But it could be a pyrrhic victory. The form of the musical itself is perhaps not up to the seriousness of the material and the sensitivity and sensibility with which it is presented. As their pentatonic melodies and Western harmonies recapitulate the cultural conflict, their lyrics achieve the pith and mystery of haiku. Most of all, the numbers astonish with their narrative nimbleness. A geopolitical history lesson wrapped in a Japanese fable wrapped in a Broadway musical, the show has a score that\u2019s dauntingly clever even by the standards of Stephen Sondheim\u2019s elevated genius bar. [&#8230;] The tension between an age-old isolation and encroaching globalism plays out in John Weidman\u2019s episodic book and Sondheim\u2019s score, one of his most adventurous. With the aid of Jonathan Tunick\u2019s peerless orchestrations, the songwriter emulates his mentor here, Oscar Hammerstein II, by planting Broadway\u2019s flag boldly in another culture. Sondheim sent us to Sweden in&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/11\/a-little-night-music-1973\/\">A Little Night Music<\/a><\/em> and Britain in&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/14\/sweeney-todd-1979\/\">Sweeney Todd<\/a><\/em> and Italy in&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/20\/passion-1994\/\">Passion<\/a><\/em> but never undertook the role of cultural observer as seriously as in <em>Pacific Overtures<\/em>. (Some may now call this appropriation; Miyamoto\u2019s mastery in a Japanese version suggests universality in the work rather than paternalism.)
