De muziek behoort tot Sondheims beste composities .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Samenvatting plot<\/strong><br>In 1846 arriveren zeeman Anthony Hope en Sweeney Todd in Londen. Todd is lang geleden door de corrupte rechter Turpin onterecht verbannen en Todd zint op wraak. In een pasteienwinkel op Fleet Street ontmoet Todd de eigenaresse Mrs. Lovett, die hem helpt zijn oude kapsalon opnieuw te openen. Ondertussen wordt Anthony verliefd op Todd&#8217;s dochter Johanna, die door rechter Turpin binnenshuis wordt gehouden. Na een mislukte poging de rechter te vermoorden richt Todd zijn woede op de hele wereld. Sweeney figureerde destijds in de zogeheten &#8220;penny dreadfuls&#8221;, fictieverhalen voor het brede publiek. Een toneelstuk van Christopher Bond uit 1973 was voor Sondheim de inspiratie om van het verhaal een musical te willen maken. Bond gaf de oorspronkelijk eendimensionale schurk namelijk een achtergrond en motivatie. Bovendien wilde Sondheim graag een horrorervaring naar het theater brengen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Thema&#8217;s<\/strong><br>Voor Sondheim is het een verhaal over wraak. De herkenbaarheid van die gevoelens maakt het voor het publiek mogelijk om sympathie te voelen voor de moordzuchtige hoofdpersoon. Regisseur Hal Prince voegde er in de originele productie echter een maatschappijkritisch concept aan toe door Todd neer te zetten als het product van industrialisatie. Het stuk werd dan ook op grootschalige wijze neergezet, tegen de achtergrond van een oude fabriek of met machines. Ook de ijzingwekkende fabrieksfluit, die klinkt aan het begin van het stuk en bij elke moord, is daar een van de symbolen van. Hoewel er inmiddels tal van andere interpretaties aan het stuk zijn gegeven, heeft Prince&#8217;s perspectief zijn effect gehad op hoe <em>Sweeney Todd<\/em> wordt uitgevoerd. Het huiselijke Britse volksverhaal verandert door de muziek in een epische en sidderende beleving. De opening (<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;The ballad of Sweeney Todd&#8221;<\/mark>) vol dissonanten, onverwachte modulaties en onderbroken crescendo&#8217;s voelt al voortdurend ongemakkelijk en spannend. <br>De partituur is zowel complex als meeslepend, met een breed scala aan muzikale stijlen die vari\u00ebren van operatische aria&#8217;s tot volksliederen en ballades. Sondheim maakt gebruik van leitmotieven, waarbij specifieke melodie\u00ebn en harmonie\u00ebn worden herhaald om personages en thema&#8217;s te vertegenwoordigen. <br>De teksten zijn ondertussen scherp, geestig en doordrenkt met donkere humor. De nummers brengen met interne rijm en ritmische subtiliteiten de emoties en motivaties van de personages op briljante wijze over. Het is een lied vol conflicterende emoties en bijpassende muziek. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">Dit dramatische moment wordt onmiddellijk verlicht door de droge reactie van Lovett en het feestelijke slotlied van de eerste akte, <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;A little priest&#8221;<\/mark>. Time has mediated things considerably. <\/sub><br><br><sub>None, however, elicited the extravagant accolades and contemptuous rage that <em>Sweeney Todd<\/em> did [&#8230;] The bizarre subject matter may have accounted for some of it, as the newsprint was filled with cries of &#8220;repellent&#8221;, &#8220;sick'&#8221;, &#8220;loathsome&#8221; and the like. [&#8230;] <\/sub><br><br><sub><em>Sweeney Todd <\/em>was a resounding commercial failure both on Broadway and in the West End, the latter reception a particularly disheartening one to me, since I had written the show as my love letter to London, a city I treasure above all except for New York. Sondheim\u2019s score, a homage to the sinister soundtracks of Bernard Herrmann, cannibalizes the book (by Hugh Wheeler) and the book\u2019s remoter sources (a 1970 play by Christopher Bond, a 19th-century penny dreadful) until only their bones remain.
