(2001) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusicals.com\/lyrics\/merrilywerollalong\/goodthinggoing.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lyrics<\/a>]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-normal-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">It could have <br>kept on growing,<br>instead of just kept on.<br>We had a good thing going. <br>Going. <br>Gone.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sondheim speelt daarnaast met heden en verleden en de terugwaartse structuur in de partituur. Hij herhaalt bepaalde muzikale secties, maar laat thema\u2019s en motieven door de tijd heen evolueren en transformeren. Zo weerspiegelt hij hoe bepaalde momenten en herinneringen in het leven van de personages veranderen in betekenis naarmate de tijd verstrijkt. Dezelfde muzikale passages krijgen verschillende emotionele ladingen afhankelijk van waar ze in de omgekeerde tijdlijn van de show worden geplaatst. Ook gebruikt hij enkele van deze muzikale herhalingen om onderstromen van herinneringen bij de personages in hun latere jaren te vertegenwoordigen. Vanwege de strikte regels die Sondheim zichzelf oplegde, was de muziek van <em>Merrily We Roll Along<\/em> een van de moeilijkste om te schrijven in zijn carri\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voorbeeld is het nummer \u201cNot a Day Goes By,\u201d dat voor het eerst bitter wordt gezongen door Frank na zijn scheiding van Beth. Laat in de tweede akte is het opnieuw te horen, ditmaal tijdens hun huwelijk. Een ander voorbeeld is \u201cGood Thing Going,\u201d dat geleidelijk wordt gedeconstrueerd gedurende de musical voordat het zijn finale &#8211; maar oorspronkelijke &#8211; vorm bereikt als \u201cWho Wants to Live in New York?\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Oorspronkelijke ontvangst<\/strong><br><em>Merrily We Roll Along <\/em>was aanvankelijk een flop. Problemen werden vooral gezien in het script en de casting. De opzet van de musical betekent dat het publiek eerst geconfronteerd wordt met de hoofdpersonen in hun meest onsympathieke, teleurgestelde vorm, waardoor emotionele connectie met de hoofdpersonen moeilijk is. De show kreeg slechte kritieken en sloot na 16 voorstellingen. Naast de problemen met de musical zelf speelde in de ogen van Sondheim enig sentiment ook een rol. Hij schreef daarover: &#8220;&#8230;Hal [Prince] and I were resented as having become succesful despite our maverick ventures. We had done eccentric shows and yet were not living in garrets. In commercial theater this was not only an anomaly, it was an irritation&#8221;. <br>Dit leidde na <em>Merrily<\/em> tot het einde van de professionele samenwerking tussen Hal Prince en Stephen Sondheim, die samen ook <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/31\/west-side-story-1956\/\">West Side Story<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/29\/a-funny-thing-happened-on-the-way-to-the-forum-1962\/\">A Funny Thing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/23\/company-1970\/\">Company<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/22\/follies-1971\/\">Follies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/21\/a-little-night-music-1973\/\">A Little Night Music<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/19\/pacific-overtures-1976\/\">Pacific Overtures<\/a>, <\/em>en<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/18\/sweeney-todd-1979\/\">Sweeney Todd<\/a><\/em> maakten. Ze zouden pas weer samenwerken bij <a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/03\/road-show-2008\/\">Road Show<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tweede leven<\/strong>: <strong>succes op Broadway<\/strong> <strong>en verfilming<\/strong><br>Sondheim en Furth zijn nog jarenlang aan de show blijven sleutelen en in gewijzigde vorm heeft de musical een tweede leven gekregen. Het stuk beleefde de afgelopen jaren vaker revivals, maar brak definitief uit de hoek van de &#8220;cultflop&#8221; met een commercieel zeer succesvolle eerste Broadway-revival in 2023 met Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe en Lindsay Mendez, onder regie van Maria Friedman. De productie won vier Tony Awards, waaronder Beste Revival. Eerst als Beth&#8217;s reactie op Franks poging haar af te doen zien van een scheiding nadat hij is vreemd gegaan, waarbij hij stelt dat ze nog steeds van hem houdt. Die versie zien we hier van Bernadette Peters. Later in de show komt het lied terug als duet op hun huwelijksdag.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-right:0;margin-bottom:0;margin-left:0\">In <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Now you know&#8221; <\/mark>praat Beth in op Frank na zijn scheiding. Hierin zijn autobiografische elementen opgenomen, zo zijn de woorden over Strawinsky een parafrasering van de afwijzing van <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/31\/west-side-story-1956\/\">West Side Story<\/a><\/em> door een producent. Stephen Sondheim speelt in dit fragment zelf de producent. The simplicity of such a form might make it seem easy to write, but it isn\u2019t, and it\u2019s harder still to tell a story in a sequence of such rigid patterns. The constraints of repeated refrain lines and frugal concision in all but the patter songs in <em>Merrily We Roll Along<\/em> was in uncomfortable contrast to the free and easy flow of the arioso writing which had characterized <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/18\/sweeney-todd-1979\/\">Sweeney Todd.<\/a><\/em> That challenge, of course, is what exhilarated me. Of all the shows I\u2019ve worked on, <em>Merrily We Roll Along<\/em> was, with the possible exception of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/29\/a-funny-thing-happened-on-the-way-to-the-forum-1962\/\">A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum<\/a><\/em> (and for similar reasons), the most difficult score to write. With <em>Forum<\/em>, however, I didn\u2019t have to worry about holding the score together\u2014the piece didn\u2019t require cohesion, only variety. <\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\"><sub>Indeed, the score of <em>Merrily<\/em> turned out to be what I wanted it to be, and eventually the show did, too. In its initial incarnation it was deplored by the critics and ignored by the public, and it took a number of revisions over the years for George Furth and me to make it the show we had hoped for. The turning point took place in La Jolla in 1985 in a production supervised and directed by James Lapine. He suggested some structural changes, particularly in Act One [&#8230;], which were crucial. Usually the heartbreak comes from Mr. Sondheim&#8217;s songs -for his music can tear through us with an emotional force as moving as Gershwin&#8217;s. And sometimes the pain is compounded by another factor &#8211; for some of Mr. Sondheim&#8217;s most powerful work turns up in shows (<em>Anyone Can Whistle<\/em>, <em>Pacific Overtures<\/em>) that fail. Suffice it to say that both kinds of pain are abundant in <em>Merrily We Roll Along<\/em>, the new Sondheim-Harold Prince-George Furth musical that opened at the Alvin last night. Mr. Sondheim has given this evening a half-dozen songs that are crushing and beautiful &#8211; that soar and linger and hurt. A central trio as sensitive and superb as this one doesn\u2019t just make&nbsp;<em>Merrily<\/em>&nbsp;more moving; it makes it much more fun. It even adds a faint glimmer of something resembling hope. If Frank can reconsider, then he may yet change. Or he may not. But either way, an actor must show us, as Groff does, a true encounter with the mirror.
