Het stuk trekt een breed publiek aan, wordt veel opgevoerd en werd door Disney verfilmd.<br><br><strong>Samenvatting plot<\/strong><br>Het verhaal draait om een bakker en zijn vrouw die proberen de vloek van een heks op te heffen, opdat ze een kind kunnen krijgen. In hun zoektocht naar vier benodigde voorwerpen kruisen ze in de bossen de paden van Roodkapje, Assepoester, Sjakie en Raponzel. In de bossen van <em>Into the Woods<\/em> komen thema&#8217;s als ouderschap, morele tegenstrijdigheid, leven en dood, gemeenschap en individuele verantwoordelijkheid naar voren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In de eerste akte volgen we nog de bekende sprookjesverhalen. Toch zijn de sprookjesfiguren complexer dan we gewend zijn: Lapine en Sondheim hebben de personages verbonden met de psychologie van Jung. De verschillende sprookjes zijn knap met elkaar verweven door Lapine, met een ogenschijnlijk lang en gelukkig einde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Net zoals in <em>Sunday in the Park with George<\/em>, lijkt alles netjes afgerond na de eerste akte, maar in een onvoorspelbare tweede akte worden diepere lagen aangeboord. Hier vervaagt de zwart-witte moraal van sprookjes in grijstinten. Een sterk symbool hiervan is het offeren van de verteller door de andere personages aan een reus. We ontdekken wat er in het echte leven overblijft van &#8220;lang en gelukkig&#8221;. Welke prijs wordt er betaald voor de verlangens uit de eerste akte? Hoe blijft het verleden ons achtervolgen? Wat betekent het najagen van eigen verlangens voor de gemeenschap? En hoe leidt het vervullen van het ene verlangen tot een nieuw verlangen? Opvallende kenmerken van de muziek zijn de veelvuldige syncopatie in de (innerlijke) dialogen en het gebruik van leidmotieven, waarbij specifieke muzikale thema\u2019s worden gekoppeld aan personages of idee\u00ebn, die door de musical heen terugkeren en verder worden ontwikkeld. Een voorbeeld van het laatste is de muziek bij de openings- (en slot)woorden &#8220;I wish&#8221;. De motieven cre\u00ebren muzikale eenheid en versterken de interconnectiviteit van de verhalen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ontvangst<\/strong><br><em>Into the Woods<\/em> werd positief ontvangen door zowel het publiek als de meeste critici. De eerste Broadway-productie won ondanks concurrentie van Andrew Lloyd Webber&#8217;s <em>The Phantom of the Opera <\/em>meerdere Tony Awards, waaronder Beste Muziek en Beste Script, en een Grammy voor het beste cast album. De musical heeft sindsdien talloze heropvoeringen gekend en werd in 2014 succesvol verfilmd door Disney. Het is ook nog altijd een populaire schoolmusical in Engelstalige landen. De laatste grote Nederlandse productie vond plaats in 2017. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#ff7a5c42\"><strong>Fragmenten<\/strong> (video&#8217;s in volgorde van de show)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De fragmenten komen onder andere uit de originele productie met o.a. Chip Zien, Joanna Gleason en Bernadette Peters. Verder zijn er fragmenten te zien uit de film van 2013, met o.a. Meryl Streep en Anna Kendrick, en uit concertversies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">Het openingsnummer <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Into the woods&#8221;<\/mark> van bijna vijftien minuten introduceert de muzikale thema&#8217;s voor de hele show en alle belangrijke personages. In een <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/NUN_MTChn5M?t=86\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">toelichting<\/a> op het lied door Stephen Sondheim aan de piano legt hij uit hoe de constante muzikale cadans de reis benadrukt zonder te gaan vervelen. De eindeloze herhaling van &#8220;into the woods&#8221; door de show heen is ook een uitdrukking van de dagelijkse gang die iedereen maakt, de wereld in.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">In de eerste akte zien we momentopnames van de sprookjes van Roodkapje, Sjakie (van de bonestaak) en Assepoester. In <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;I know things now&#8221;<\/mark>, <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Giants in the sky&#8221;<\/mark> en <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;On the steps of the palace&#8221; <\/mark>vertellen respectievelijk Roodkapje, Sjakie en Assepoester over wat hun ervaringen hun geleerd en gebracht hebben, met onderlinge inhoudelijke en tekstuele overlappingen. &#8220;Giants in the sky&#8221; is hier opgenomen in een uitvoering door Lin-Manuel Miranda voor Sondheim&#8217;s 90e verjaardag.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">In het komische <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Agony&#8221;<\/mark> beklagen de prinsen van Assepoester en Raponzel zich over hun moeite hen voor zich te winnen. De tweede akte bevat een reprise. Nadat de heks erachter komt dat Raponzel een prins omhoog laat klimmen aan haar haar, prent ze Raponzel in het eerste lied nogmaals in dat ze beschermd moet worden van de wereld. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">Als Raponzel toch bij haar wegloopt met de prins bezweert de heks: <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;She&#8217;ll be back&#8221;<\/mark>. Het lied werd speciaal voor de Disneyfilm door Sondheim geschreven, maar werd uiteindelijk geschrapt omdat het teveel het ritme van de film onderbrak.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Moments in the woods&#8221;<\/mark> is het reflectieve lied van de bakkersvrouw, zoals eerder Roodkapje, Assepoester en Sjakie die hadden. Ze zingt het na een onverwachte escapade met de prins van Assepoester, waarna ze de episode probeert een plek te geven naast haar leven met haar man.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">Inmiddels hebben de gebeurtenissen dan een duistere wending genomen; de acties van de personages hebben ertoe geleid dat een reus gewekt is die wraakzuchtig het land verwoest. In <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Last midnight&#8221;<\/mark> confronteert de heks de kleine groep overlevers van alle gebeurtenissen met hun eigen rol erin en met het bedrog dat ze gaandeweg gepleegd hebben, terwijl ze de heks de schuld van alles geven. Als ze haar oplossing &#8211; het opofferen van Sjakie &#8211; afwijzen, keert ze zich af van de wereld, ook ingegeven door het verlies van haar dochter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">De bakker geeft het op, laat zijn zoon achter, maar wordt dan geconfronteerd met zijn verloren vader door wie hijzelf als kind in de steek is gelaten in <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;No more&#8221;<\/mark> (een pijnlijke omissie in de filmversie).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">In afwachting van hun laatste poging om het gevaar van de reus af te wenden, troosten Assepoester en de bakker de jonge Roodkapje en Sjakie in hun rouw om hun familie in <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;No one is alone&#8221;<\/mark>, waarin de belangrijkste muzikale thema&#8217;s samenkomen. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">Het veelvuldig gecoverde <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Children will listen&#8221;<\/mark> sluit het stuk af, hier in een concertversie van Maria Friedman, inclusief door Sondheim voor Barbra Streisand toegevoegd couplet en bridge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; If we were to focus on the consequences of the little transgressions each character makes in pursuit of his or her heart\u2019s desire, it followed naturally that the first act would deal with the traditional telling of the tales up to the Happily and the second with the Ever After. The first would be farce, the second melodrama (still with laughs, of course). As I say, Content Dictates Form.<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\"><sub>Having learned so much about the subject of farce from my four-year observation of Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart struggling over the intricacies of <a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/29\/a-funny-thing-happened-on-the-way-to-the-forum-1962\/\"><em>A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum<\/em><\/a>, I generously offered to give Lapine the benefit of my knowledge to help him construct the plot. To this end I suggested he draw a detailed linear map which would chart the progress of each character\u2019s journey through the woods and how it intersected with each of the others. He gave me a tolerant smile, said he\u2019d think about it and plunged headlong into the woods, into the middle of the story, with minimal ideas as to where things would lead (or so he led me to believe) and emerged from them with the best-constructed farce since <em>Forum<\/em>. The elegance with which he cross-cuts among the four stories simultaneously throughout the show still astonishes me. It is a lesson in play construction.<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\"><sub>I must add that at one point in the collaborative joy of our early discussions I brashly predicted that if the piece worked, it would spawn innumerable productions for many years to come, since it dealt with world myths and fables and would therefore never feel dated. Moreover, it would appeal to schools and amateur theaters as well as professional ones, especially in conservative parts of the country which are hesitant to support shows that deal with contemporary themes in contemporary ways and use four-letter words (there are none in the show).
