De show maakt hoofdpersonen van aanslagplegers op Amerikaanse presidenten: een uniek en controversieel uitgangspunt. De musical wordt vaak kleinschalig uitgevoerd en heeft alleen in 2004 een Broadway-productie gekend, die vijf Tony Awards won. Sondheim beschouwde <em>Assassins<\/em> als de show die het dichtst is gekomen bij zijn hoop en verwachtingen ervan vooraf, in hoge mate dankzij John Weidman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Plot en thematiek<\/strong><br>De musical gaat over negen van de dertien historische personen die probeerden de president van de Verenigde Staten te vermoorden, en daar al dan niet in slaagden. De psychologie en motivaties van de (potenti\u00eble) moordenaars worden in het stuk onderzocht. Gaandeweg komt een patroon naar voren: het zijn mensen die zich niet gehoord voelen, geen aansluiting vinden en voor wie de &#8220;American dream&#8221; niet werkt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tegen het einde van de musical zijn in de ogen van het publiek de historische &#8220;monsters&#8221; veranderd in complexe mensen van vlees en bloed, waarvan de vreselijke daden tot op zekere hoogte zelfs te begrijpen zijn, overigens zonder dat ze worden genormaliseerd. En dat alles in een constant wisselende sfeer met veel humor, intensiteit en tragiek. Een ongemakkelijke reis dus, zeker voor de Amerikaanse psyche waarin de nationale schokken van de historische moorden, het vuurwapengeweld en de schaduwzijde van de belofte van de American dream hevig resoneren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Muziek<\/strong> <strong>en teksten<\/strong><br>Muzikaal wordt in de show een reis gemaakt door alle tijdsperioden waarin de aanslagen plaatsvonden. Onder leiding van de &#8220;Balladeer&#8221; worden de geschiedenissen verhaald in de stijl van volksliedjes door de jaren heen. Elk personage wordt daarnaast gekenmerkt door zijn eigen muzikale stijl, zoals de optimistische Guiteau, de sinistere John Wilkes Booth en de Italiaanse Zangara. Daarnaast cre\u00ebert Sondheim een muzikale tegenstelling tussen de Balladeer die de American dream en de communis opinio vertolkt en de moordenaars die langzamerhand met hun blik op de wereld de overhand nemen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De liedteksten sluiten tamelijk goed aan bij de historische werkelijkheid, en zijn soms opgebouwd rond citaten van de historische personages. Deze interpretatie van de American dream, in plaats van &#8220;the right to the pursuit of happiness&#8221; zoals in de Amerikaanse onafhankelijkheidsverklaring staat, vertelt al veel over het perspectief van de moordenaars. Het fragment laat het slotlied zien, tijdens de Tony Awards van 2004.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">De eerste moordenaar die het publiek beter leert kennen is John Wilkes Booth. Nadat hij Lincoln vermoordt, vertelt de troubadour in<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\"> &#8220;The ballad of Booth&#8221;<\/mark> zijn verhaal en breekt Booth zelf daarop in. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">In <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Unworthy of your love&#8221;<\/mark> (in de stijl van een popsong uit de jaren zeventig) zien we John Hinckley, die geobsedeerd raakte door Jodie Foster en Reagan probeerde te vermoorden om haar aandacht te krijgen. Terwijl hij zijn obsessieve lied voor Jodie Foster zingt, zingt Lynette Fromme, die president Ford probeerde te vermoorden, hetzelfde lied met nog extremere teksten voor Charles Manson. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;The ballad of Guiteau&#8221;<\/mark> bevat teksten van de toespraak die Charles Guiteau, de moordenaar van president Garfield, hield vlak voorafgaand aan zijn executie. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Something just broke&#8221;<\/mark> is een latere toevoeging voor de Londense productie van 1992. But if I were asked to name the show that comes the closest to my expectations for it, the answer would be <em>Assassins<\/em>. Certainly, John [Weidman, red.]\u2019s book does. <\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\"><sub>As to my own contribution, in every show I\u2019ve written there are things in the score I wish I could have fixed at the time but didn\u2019t know how to, or in hindsight don\u2019t have the patience to return to. <em>Assassins<\/em> has only one moment I\u2019d like to improve (the brief passage I call \u201cFamily,\u201d which reeks of the academic\u2014that is, it resounds with the voice of the songwriter rather than the characters). Otherwise, as far as I\u2019m concerned, the show is perfect. <em>Assassins<\/em>, a daring work even by his lights, Mr. Sondheim and his collaborator, the writer John Weidman, say the unthinkable, though they sometimes do so in a deceptively peppy musical-comedy tone. Without exactly asking that the audience sympathize with some of the nation&#8217;s most notorious criminals, this show insists on reclaiming them as products, however defective, of the same values and traditions as the men they tried to murder. To Mr. Sondheim, the dreams of Presidential assassins seem not so much different from those empty all-American dreams of stardom he enshrined in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/30\/gypsy-a-musical-fable-1959\/\">Gypsy<\/a><\/em>: these killers want to grab headlines, get the girl, or see their names in lights. [&#8230;] <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One need not agree with Mr. Sondheim&#8217;s cynical view of history and humanity to feel that <em>Assassins<\/em> has the potential to be an extraordinarily original piece of theater. In its Off Broadway premiere, unfortunately, that potential is unfulfilled.&nbsp;[&#8230;.] <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Sondheim&#8217;s better numbers in <em>Assassins<\/em> do aspire to the highest standard and not infrequently meet it. As the show as a whole attempts to rewrite American history, so the composer audaciously attempts to rewrite the history of American music. This is an anti-musical about anti-heroes. Every song upends a traditional native form: folk music, spirituals and John Philip Sousa are all rethought along with Broadway idioms and the official national musical oratory of Irving Berlin and Francis Scott Key. [&#8230;] <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brilliant as these songs can be individually, they never cohere into a fully realized score that builds in cumulative effect the way most of the later Sondheim scores do.&nbsp;[&#8230;] <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Mr. Sondheim has real guts. He isn&#8217;t ashamed to identify with his assassins to the extreme point where he will wave a gun in a crowded theater, artistically speaking, if that&#8217;s what is needed to hit the target of American complacency. Sondheim has always been an artist concerned more with clouds than silver linings. While most Broadway musicals are designed to disseminate the intoxicating feeling of dreams coming true, Sondheim prefers to explore the long moment after, when the prize so enthusiastically pursued turns out to be a shoddy piece of goods. <em>Assassins<\/em> is his most scabrous commentary yet on the poisoned chalice of romantic illusions. [&#8230;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s its strength: Rather than a standard musical-comedy score that draws variety from a show\u2019s narrative progression, Sondheim\u2019s writing for <em>Assassins<\/em> is an artfully conceived, cohesive whole, almost a single piece of music composed of theme and variations. The sly distortions of familiar musical tropes &#8212; whether &#8221;Hail to the Chief&#8221; or a barbershop quartet &#8212; approximate the skewed ways in which these characters hear everyday melodies. [&#8230;] <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sheer cynicism of the opening number that introduces the nine assassins can take your breath away: So much anger in the insidious music, such profound despair in the fevered lyrics! According to the Proprietor (the formidable Eddie Cooper) of the show\u2019s bizarre carnival world, \u201cEverybody\u2019s got the right to be happy \/ Everybody\u2019s got the right to their dreams.\u201d So far, so good.
