Samen met<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/18\/sweeney-todd-1979\/\">Sweeney Todd<\/a><\/em> en <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/03\/road-show-2008\/\">Road Show<\/a><\/em> behoort <em>Passion<\/em> tot de drie musicals die door Sondheim zelf zijn ge\u00efnitieerd. <br><br><strong>Samenvatting plot<\/strong><br>De musical speelt zich af in het Itali\u00eb van 1863. Hoofdpersoon is de legerkapitein Giorgio, die een gepassioneerde relatie heeft met Clara, een getrouwde vrouw. Als hij naar een afgelegen militaire standplaats wordt gestuurd, ontmoet hij daar Fosca. Fosca is een ziekelijke, onaantrekkelijke vrouw met hysterische uitbarstingen, die vrijwel onmiddellijk voor Giorgio valt en hem onophoudelijk tracht voor zich te winnen. In de loop van de musical gebeurt wat bijna niet voor te stellen lijkt: Giorgio valt op zijn beurt voor Fosca. De kern van de musical is de transformatie van Giorgio en zijn toenemende begrip en liefde voor Fosca. Het verhaal wordt grotendeels verteld aan de hand van brieven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Thematiek<\/strong><br>De musical onderzoekt verschillende vormen van liefde. Fosca\u2019s liefde voor Giorgio is allesomvattend, zelfopofferend en obsessief, en contrasteert met de liefde tussen Giorgio en Clara. Uiteindelijk verandert Fosca&#8217;s liefde zowel haar als Giorgio. In de eerste plaats door de intensiteit en onophoudelijke liefde van Fosca en de totale serieusheid ervan, zonder relativering, humor of cynisme. In de tweede plaats door de opzet van het stuk. De muziek loopt het grootste deel van het bijna operatische stuk door, en van afzonderlijke songs is nauwelijks sprake. Het is bovendien een eenakter. Dit maakt dat er tussendoor geen momenten zijn die uitnodigen tot applaus; pas na afloop van het stuk wordt de intensiteit doorbroken en kan het publiek weer ademhalen. <br>De beklemming is de kracht van de show, maar ook een uitdaging voor het publiek. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Muziek en teksten<\/strong><br>De complexe muziek is emotioneel intens, maar ook minimaal en intiem. Sondheim gebruik veel ongebruikelijke harmonie\u00ebn en melodische wendingen. De muziek draagt hierdoor bij aan de intense sfeer van het stuk. Net als in veel van zijn andere musicals maakt Sondheim veel gebruik van leidmotieven, verbonden aan onder meer Fosca, Giorgio, Clara, liefde en obsessie en de militaire omgeving van het stuk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <em>Passion<\/em> zijn de muziek en teksten nauw met elkaar verweven. De melodie\u00ebn ondersteunen en versterken de emoties die in de teksten worden uitgedrukt, en vice versa. Dit zorgt voor een holistische en meeslepende ervaring. <br>De teksten gaan diep in op de psychologische staat van de personages. Ze onthullen hun innerlijke gedachten, gevoelens en conflicten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ontvangst<\/strong><br>Recensenten waren zelden zo positief over Sondheims voorstellingen als over <em>Passion<\/em>. De eerste ontvangst door het publiek was echter negatief: de weerzin tegen Fosca was bij de try-out-voorstellingen zo groot dat mensen schreeuwden naar de acteurs. De publieke respons leidde tot enkele aanpassingen, maar Sondheim vermoedde dat negatieve publieksreacties ook te maken hadden met de oncomfortabele parallellen die mensen zien tussen zichzelf en Fosca en Giorgio. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De originele productie won Tony Awards voor Beste Musical, Beste Script, Beste Muziek en Beste Actrice (Donna Murphy). Na deze prijzen en de positieve recensies draaide van de weeromstuit ook het publiek bij. Toch kon het uitdagende <em>Passion <\/em>bij het brede publiek niet op tegen grote entertainmentproducties van dat moment als <em>Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon <\/em>en<em> Les Mis\u00e9rables<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#ff7a5c42\"><strong>Fragmenten<\/strong> (video&#8217;s in volgorde van show)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">Het fragment van de Tony Awards met de originele cast laat drie sc\u00e8nes zien. Allereerst de opening waarin Giorgio en Clara de liefde bedrijven (<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Happiness&#8221;<\/mark>). Vervolgens het laatste deel van scene 3 (<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Garden sequence&#8221;<\/mark>), waarin Fosca en Giorgio samen door de kasteeltuin lopen, niet lang na hun eerste ontmoeting. Ten slotte <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Finale&#8221;<\/mark>, waarin Giorgio Fosca&#8217;s laatste brief leest, waarin ze schrijft dat ze spoedig zal sterven.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">In<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\"> &#8220;I read&#8221;<\/mark> legt Fosca uit dat ze leest om te leven door de ogen van anderen. De Nederlandse versie van Vera Mann is in de <a href=\"#Nederland-Passion\">Nederlandse sectie<\/a> van deze pagina te zien.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">Het fragment <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;I wish I could forget you&#8221;<\/mark> is een van de drie echte songs in het stuk. Hierin dicteert Fosca een brief van Giorgio aan Fosca. Het is een door haar bedachte en berekende brief, die ze voor zichzelf wil bewaren om Giorgio te herinneren. Giorgio schrijft de gedicteerde brief, maar is alleen bij haar omdat zijn eerdere afwijzing ervoor dreigt te zorgen dat ze zal sterven.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">Als Fosca onaangekondigd en ongewenst bij Giorgio in de trein stapt naar Milaan, probeert hij haar duidelijk te maken dat hij niet van haar houdt en dat zij hem op moet geven. <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Loving you&#8221;<\/mark> is de reactie van Fosca daarop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; As the hostility during previews indicated, the story struck some audiences as ridiculous. They refused to believe that anyone, much less the handsome and saintly Giorgio, could come to love someone so manipulative, relentless and menacing, not to mention physically repellent, as Fosca. As the perennial banality would have it, they couldn\u2019t \u201cidentify\u201d with either of the main characters. <\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\"><sub>The violence of their reaction, however, strikes me as an example of \u201cThe lady doth protest too much.\u201d I think they may have identified with Fosca and Giorgio all too readily and uncomfortably. The idea of a love that\u2019s pure, that burns with D.H. Lawrence\u2019s gemlike flame, emanating from a source so gnarled and selfish, is hard to accept. Perhaps they were reacting to the realization that we are all Fosca, we are all Giorgio, we are all Clara.
