De historische gebeurtenissen zijn de achtergrond voor een verhaal over (verspild) talent, ambitie, familie en de Amerikaanse droom. De musical heeft veel eerdere vormen gekend, voordat Sondheim en John Weidman (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/09\/assassins-1990\/\">Assassins<\/a><\/em>) tevreden waren met het eindresultaat.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Samenvatting plot<\/strong><br>De musical begint met de dood van de vader van de Mizner-broers, die hen aanmoedigt om hun dromen na te jagen en zichzelf opnieuw uit te vinden. Wilson Mizner is een charismatische en roekeloze avonturier, terwijl zijn broer Addison een meer voorzichtige en creatieve architect is. Samen reizen ze door Amerika op zoek naar fortuin en succes, van de goudvelden van Alaska tot Palm Beach in Florida. Wilson verliest zichzelf in gokken en bedrog, terwijl Addison probeert eerlijke successen te behalen door het ontwerpen van luxueuze huizen. Hun verschillende benaderingen leiden tot conflicten en uiteindelijk tot een breuk in hun relatie. De musical eindigt met een reflectie op hun levens en de erfenis van hun keuzes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>The Legendary Mizners<\/em><\/strong><br>Het idee voor <em>Road Show<\/em> droeg Sondheim al met zich mee sinds begin jaren vijftig, toen hij in <em>The New Yorker<\/em> las over het boek <em>The Legendary Mizners<\/em>. De twee excentrieke broers leefden in de jaren 1872-1933 en lieten hun stempel achter in de Amerikaanse geschiedenis. Wilson was een man van vele talenten, met veel bravoure en weinig principes: toneelschrijver, ondernemer, verteller, vrouwenverslinder en gewiekste oplichter. Addison maakte naam als architect, in onder andere Palm Beach in Florida. Hij was een dromer, een bon vivant, op zoek naar sociale status en quasi-openlijk homoseksueel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Moeizame totstandkoming<\/strong><br>De weg naar <em>Road Show <\/em>was lang en moeizaam. Sondheim en Weidman werkten meer dan tien jaar aan de show, en slaagden er lange tijd niet in er een succes van te maken. Onder de namen <em>Wise Guys,<\/em> <em>Gold!<\/em> en <em>Bounce<\/em> kwamen er verschillende scripts en producties tot stand, waarin telkens een andere toon en thematiek bovenliggend was in het verhaal. De vele veranderingen van titel reflecteren dit. De musical bleef echter lijden aan een gebrek aan richting en focus. De productie van <em>Bounce<\/em> in 2003 werd &#8220;mild at best and disappointed at worst&#8221; ontvangen, schrijft Sondheim erover. In 2008 maakten Sondheim en Weidman met behulp van regisseur John Doyle een snellere, finale versie van de show. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Thematiek<\/strong><br>Waar eerdere versies licht, positief en komisch van aard waren, kreeg de show uiteindelijk een iets meer dramatische toon. Het belangrijkste thema werd uiteindelijk het vinden van je eigen weg in het leven. Vandaar de titel&nbsp;<em>Road Show<\/em>. Het verhaal van de twee broers raakt een breed palet aan thema&#8217;s als Amerikaans ondernemerschap, opportunisme, hebzucht, broederliefde, volhardendheid, veerkracht, rivaliteit en moraliteit. Sondheim werd vooral aangesproken door de verspilling van talenten, in het bijzonder door Wilson die in een patroon van twaalf ambachten, dertien ongelukken elk succes weer uit zijn handen liet vallen. We zien talent als thema in veel musicals van Sondheim, zoals in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/17\/merrily-we-roll-along-1981\/\">Merrily We Roll Along<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;en&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/16\/sunday-in-the-park-with-george\/\">Sunday in the Park with George<\/a><\/em>. John Weidman werd juist getroffen door Addison en de intense en complexe relatie tussen de twee broers. In&nbsp;<em>Road Show<\/em>&nbsp;kijken de broers postuum terug op hun leven en mislukkingen, op wat terecht is gekomen van hun talenten en komen ze uiteindelijk tot een verzoening na een geschiedenis vol conflicten en verwijten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Muziek en teksten<\/strong><br>De muziek van <em>Road Show<\/em> is gevarieerd en weerspiegelt de verschillende perioden en plaatsen in het leven van de Mizner-broers. Sondheim combineert ragtime, jazz en klassieke stijlen om de sfeer van de tijdsperiode op te roepen. De teksten zijn ongecompliceerd in vergelijking met veel ander werk van Sondheim, maar kenmerkend in hun scherpzinnigheid, ironie en emotie.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ontvangst<\/strong><br><em>Road Show <\/em>is nooit op Broadway uitgevoerd. De Off-Broadway-productie van 2008 ontving wel een Obie Award en Drama Desk Award voor muziek en liedteksten. Het geldt als een ondergewaardeerd werk in Sondheims carri\u00e8re. Sondheim zelf had altijd een zwak voor het stuk en was tevreden met de uiteindelijke vorm ervan. Zelf dacht hij dat <em>Road Show<\/em> net als <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sondheimnederland.com\/2019\/01\/17\/merrily-we-roll-along-1981\/\">Merrily We Roll Along<\/a><\/em> een aantal jaren en producties nodig zou hebben om het spook van de moeizame totstandkoming en slechte ontvangst van eerdere versies te verjagen. En er zijn inderdaad tekenen van dat <em>Road Show<\/em> opnieuw wordt ontdekt en gewaardeerd in zijn uiteindelijke vorm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#ff7a5c42\"><strong>Fragmenten<\/strong> (video&#8217;s in volgorde van de show)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;It&#8217;s in your hands now&#8221;<\/mark> is de afscheidsboodschap van de stervende vader van de Mizners.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">In <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Isn&#8217;t he something?&#8221;<\/mark> leest de moeder van beide broers over Wilson&#8217;s laatste ondernemingen, in aanwezigheid van Addison die voor haar zorgt terwijl Wilson er nooit is. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">In<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\"> &#8220;The best thing that ever has happened to me&#8221;<\/mark> vindt Addison laat in zijn leven de liefde met Hollis. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">De finale, een combinatie van <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Get out of my life&#8221;<\/mark>, <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;Go&#8221;<\/mark> en <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-color\">&#8220;What a waste (reprise)&#8221;<\/mark>, laat zien hoe Addison Hollis de deur wijst, omdat hij inmiddels verstrikt is geraakt in Wilson&#8217;s oplichterij en geen weg terug ziet. it just&nbsp;took us fourteen years to find out what&nbsp;it was\u2014fourteen years and four scripts,&nbsp;reflected in their titles: <em>Wise Guys<\/em> (opportunity vs. opportunism); <em>Gold!<\/em>&nbsp;(greed vs. morality); <em>Bounce<\/em> (resilience&nbsp;and reinvention); and <em>Road Show<\/em>&nbsp;(finding your destiny). <em>Road Show<\/em> is&nbsp;the right title for what we arrived at,&nbsp;but it\u2019s a bit drab; I still prefer <em>Get&nbsp;Rich Quick!<\/em>, which hints at all four.&nbsp;Like Wilson, the show kept reinventing itself. \u201cWhat\u2019s Next?\u201d could have&nbsp;been our theme song, and maybe even&nbsp;our title.&nbsp;<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\"><sub>It took four scripts and three directors, each of whom had an idea of how&nbsp;to arrive at what the show should be:&nbsp;Sam [Mendes, red.]\u2019s to enlarge its scope by freeing&nbsp;us from the facts of the Mizners\u2019 lives;&nbsp;Hal [Prince, red.]\u2019s to aerate it by introducing a heterosexual element to the story; [John, red.] Doyle\u2019s&nbsp;to blur its picaresque quality with&nbsp;quick cuts and the telescoping of&nbsp;scenes. All the ideas seemed reasonable enough at the time, and John and&nbsp;I, like the Mizners, felt we should explore each road. It was the last one that&nbsp;hit the mark: Doyle\u2019s approach was&nbsp;an exemplary manifestation of Less Is&nbsp;More and Content Dictates Form, and&nbsp;the piece became the one we were trying to write but didn\u2019t know it.<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\"><sub><em>Road Show<\/em> was greeted dismissively: respectfully, but unexcitedly.&nbsp;Part of this response, I think, was&nbsp;that in different guises it had already&nbsp;received two productions, neither of&nbsp;which was satisfying, and maybe even&nbsp;unconsciously (or maybe consciously)&nbsp;by the critics and theater cognoscenti&nbsp;as having passed its sell-by date. Perhaps it always will be greeted&nbsp;dismissively, and perhaps my fondness&nbsp;for it and my pride in it exemplify the&nbsp;parent\u2019s defensive love of the homelier&nbsp;child, but what matters to me is that&nbsp;John and I finally got the show we&nbsp;wanted. Always in the service of storytelling, they are leisurely, mainly low-key numbers given an appealing early 20th century sound by Jonathan Tunick\u2019s stately orchestrations. <em>Road Show<\/em> could have used more emotional texture and lucidity in papering its themes onto the brothers\u2019 post-mortem, but it\u2019s an alluring odyssey, and the Public Theater deserves credit for finally giving New York audiences the chance to experience it. These are often brisk, forward-moving songs with unusually simple and straightforward lyrics by Sondheim standards that essentially iterate \u201cAnd then they did this.\u201d While they\u2019re cleverly shaped and staged, they do grow repetitive, and they tend both to shrink and enlarge the brothers in ways that keep us from really knowing them.
