Sondheim on Sondheim is een revue gevuld met Sondheims songs, afgewisseld met stukken uit interviews met hem. De show startte op Broadway en werd vervolgens op meerdere plaatsen in de VS en Australië geproduceerd. Voor Sondheim on Sondheim schreef Stephen Sondheim speciaal het hiernaast te beluisteren nummer “God”. Hij schrijft daarover in Look, I made a hat: “Embarrassed (although flattered) at having an evening not just of my work but with me as photographed host, I immediately fell into a familiar self-deprecating mode and wrote the following number, which was suggested by a New York Magazine headline that had asked the unanswerable camp question: “Is Sondheim God?””
