Here We Are, aanvankelijk aangekondigd als Square One, is de laatste toevoeging aan het repertoire van Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim schreef alle muziek en teksten ervoor; het script werd echter na zijn overlijden af gemaakt. Het tweede deel van de musical bevat geen muziek meer, wat volgens de makers passend was gezien de gebeurtenissen in het stuk, maar wat niet de oorspronkelijke bedoeling was en ook een consequentie van het overlijden van Sondheim.
Samenvatting plot en thema’s
Here We Are is gebaseerd op de films van de Spaans-Mexicaanse filmmaker Luis Buñuel: Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie (De verholen charme van de kleinburgerlijkheid) en El angel exterminador (De vernietigende engel).De musical speelt zich af in een surrealistische setting waarin personages gevangen zijn in bizarre sociale situaties. In de eerste akte, geïnspireerd door Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie, probeert een groep rijke mensen herhaaldelijk samen te dineren, maar hun plannen worden voortdurend verstoord door onverwachte gebeurtenissen. In de tweede akte, gebaseerd op El angel exterminador, is het gezelschap na een overdadige maaltijd niet in staat het pand te verlaten.

Ontvangst
De musical werd voor het eerst opgevoerd in The Shed in New York en liep van september 2023 tot januari 2024. Recensenten waardeerden de kenmerkende muziek en woordkunst van Sondheim. De productie werd bovendien geprezen om de keuzes van regisseur Joe Mantello, de arrangementen van Jonathan Tunick en de dynamische uitvoeringen van acteurs zoals Bobby Cannavale, David Hyde Pierce, Denis O’Hara en Rachel Bay Jones. .Kritische noten waren dat de muziek en teksten veel deed denken aan eerder werk van Sondheim, en dat de grote vraag is of Sondheim het laatste deel van de musical daadwerkelijk zonder muziek had willen laten.

Muzikale hoogtepunten zijn onder meer “Waiter’s Song”, “Soldier’s Dream”, “Bishop’s Song”, “Shine” en de slotmuziek. “Bishop’s Song”, waarin een bisschop een andere carrière wenst, en de slotmuziek zijn als fragmenten opgenomen.

“That we’re seeing the musical at all is truly fortunate since even minor Sondheim, which in my estimation this piece feels like on a single viewing (always risky when it comes to his work), puts most other composers to shame.
